Shedding Light on Style: How to Coordinate Lighting and Flooring
Most homeowners approach interior design in silos: they pick their flooring, then their furniture, and eventually, they look for a few lamps. However, the most stunning homes—the ones that look like they belong in a magazine—are designed with a holistic approach. Specifically, the relationship between your lighting and your flooring is one of the most critical “secret” ingredients in professional design.
Lighting changes the way we perceive color and texture. A dark walnut floor might look rich and sophisticated in a well-lit room but could make a poorly lit space feel like a cave. Conversely, bright LED lighting can make certain glossy tiles look clinical if not balanced correctly. At Enterprise Wholesale Flooring and Lighting, we are unique because we specialize in both elements, allowing us to help you create a perfectly balanced environment.
The Science of Light Reflection
Every flooring material has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV). This is a measure of how much light a surface reflects versus how much it absorbs.
- Light Floors: Light-colored hardwoods, white tiles, or pale carpets reflect more light, making a small room feel larger and airier.
- Dark Floors: Darker tones absorb light, creating a cozy, grounded, and intimate atmosphere.
When you choose a dark floor, you generally need to “layer” your lighting. This means moving beyond a single ceiling fixture and adding floor lamps, sconces, or under-cabinet lighting to ensure the space doesn’t feel too heavy.
Choosing the Right Color Temperature
The “temperature” of your light bulbs—measured in Kelvins—can completely shift the hue of your flooring.
- Warm Light (2700K – 3000K): This is the traditional “yellowish” light. It beautifully enhances the gold and red undertones in oak or cherry wood floors.
- Cool Light (4000K – 5000K): This mimics daylight. It is excellent for modern grey LVP or stone-look tiles, as it prevents them from looking “muddy” or “yellowed.”
If you aren’t sure which temperature works best for your specific sample, our team is happy to help. We have decades of experience in the industry, which you can read about on our About Us page.
Trends in Integrated Design
One of the hottest trends we see in the Wiregrass area is the use of accent lighting to highlight flooring textures. For example, installing “toe-kick” lighting under kitchen cabinets can cast a soft glow across a beautiful tile floor, highlighting the grout lines and the natural variations in the stone.
In living rooms, a dramatic chandelier can serve as a focal point that draws the eye upward, but its light must be diffused enough so it doesn’t create harsh glares on polished hardwood or high-gloss laminate.
